Same day, then a hard stop
New Zealand is unusually permissive at first and then unusually strict. If a slot is available you can resit the theory test the same day. But after two same-day failures you must wait 10 working days before trying again.
That ten working day penalty is effectively a fortnight, and it exists precisely because same-day resits invite candidates to try again without changing anything.
Which makes the decision after a first fail genuinely consequential. Walking straight back in is allowed, but if it goes wrong twice you have converted a bad morning into a two-week delay.
What it costs
The NZD $96.10 licence fee covers your first two attempts, so an immediate resit does not cost extra. After those two are used, each further attempt is $54.60.
This is the reverse of most countries, where every attempt is billed. New Zealand front-loads the cost and gives you two goes for it — then charges properly.
Combined with the 10 working day rule, the structure strongly rewards passing within the first two attempts and penalises a scattergun approach.
Why a same-day resit usually fails too
You will get a different selection of questions from a much larger bank, so the specific items you missed are unlikely to reappear in the same wording. Sitting again twenty minutes later with the same knowledge produces the same result for the same reason.
At a 91% pass mark there is no margin for the gap you just discovered. Three permitted mistakes cannot absorb a topic you have not studied, and you cannot learn a topic in the twenty minutes between attempts.
A same-day resit is only sensible if you genuinely failed on nerves or misreading rather than knowledge — and that is rarer than it feels in the moment.
What to do instead
Take the day. Identify the category behind each miss and each guess, then close those specifically rather than re-reading the Road Code end to end.
Pay particular attention to the give way rules. They changed in 2012, meaning advice from anyone who learned before then can be confidently wrong, and they carry real weight on the paper.
Check the graduated licensing conditions too — supervision requirements and the zero alcohol limit for under-20 drivers are commonly assumed and commonly missed.
Then practise to 34 or 35 out of 35 before rebooking. At a 91% threshold, anything less than near-perfect at home is a fail waiting to happen at the counter.
