Pass marks get quoted as percentages, which hides how thin the margin actually is. Converted into wrong answers, the picture changes completely. New South Wales runs 45 questions at 90%, so you need 41 correct — four wrong answers and you are still fine, five and you are not. Queensland’s PrepL road rules test is 30 questions at 90%, needing 27 correct, which leaves room for exactly three mistakes.

A candidate who is excellent on speed limits and shaky on give-way rules does not lose one mark on give-way. They lose three or four, because the test asks about give-way more than once. That is how someone who “knew about 85% of it” walks out with a fail on a 90% paper.

The practical consequence is that a weak category is far more dangerous than a weak overall score. Fixing one blind spot is usually worth more marks than a general revision pass over everything.

Which topics eat the margin

Give-way and right-of-way questions are the most reliable source of lost marks in every state. Uncontrolled intersections, roundabouts with multiple lanes, and turning across oncoming traffic all rely on rules that are simple to state and easy to invert under pressure.

Road signs are the second. Learners tend to study the written road rules and skim the sign system, but parking signs, lane-control signs and warning signs occupy a large share of every state bank — and they are pure recall, so there is no reasoning your way to the answer.

The third is the set of topics people skip on principle: alcohol limits, fatigue rules, and what to do at a crash scene. They feel like filler until three of them appear on a paper that only allowed three mistakes.

Building a buffer instead of scraping through

Aim to pass practice exams by a margin, not by one mark. If Queensland allows three wrong, target zero to one in practice — that gap absorbs the two or three extra mistakes that nerves and unfamiliar phrasing reliably add on the day.

Track which category each wrong answer came from rather than just the score. Three mocks at 27/30 tell you almost nothing; three mocks where every miss was a give-way question tell you exactly what to do next.

Sit full-length mocks at your own state’s real question count and pass mark, not a rounded version. A 10-question quiz at 90% forgives one mistake; the real 45-question paper forgives four, and the difference in how it feels is larger than the arithmetic suggests.

Once you can clear three consecutive full mocks with marks to spare, the real test stops being a coin toss. That is the actual finish line — not a single lucky pass.
