How soon you can sit it again
The wait is shorter than most people fear. In New South Wales you can resit the online Driver Knowledge Test 12 hours after a fail — book in the evening and you can be done the next morning. Western Australia makes you wait until the next day. Queensland allows one attempt per day.
Victoria has no fixed statutory wait for the learner permit test; the practical constraint is appointment availability rather than a rule, and the online format has made same-week retries routine.
None of these are long enough to justify starting your revision from scratch, and none are short enough to justify walking straight back in without changing anything. The gap exists to be used.
What a second attempt costs
New South Wales charges AUD $58 per attempt, whether you sit it online or in person, so a fail is a straightforwardly expensive event. Queensland is AUD $29.70 per attempt.
Western Australia is cheaper on the resit than the first go: AUD $22.40 for the first attempt and $19.20 for each subsequent one. Victoria is the outlier in the other direction — the first attempt online is free, and only then does it cost, at $28.70 for an online retake or $50.80 in person.
Two failed attempts in NSW costs more than the entire Victorian pathway. Worth knowing before you decide you are “probably ready”.
What actually changes on the retake
You will not get the same paper. Every state pulls a fresh selection from a much larger bank, so memorising the specific questions you got wrong is close to useless — the same rule will come back worded differently, and a memorised letter will not survive it.
This is the single most common reason a second attempt fails too. People review the questions they remember rather than the rules those questions were testing, walk back in, and meet the same rule wearing a different sentence.
The fix is to work at the level of the rule. If you missed a question about giving way at an unmarked crossroads, learn the give-way rule properly and you are covered for every phrasing of it, including the three variants you have not seen yet.
A plan for the gap between attempts
Write down every topic you know you guessed on, not just the ones marked wrong. A lucky guess is a fail waiting for its second chance, and the retake bank is large enough to find it.
Then drill those categories specifically rather than re-sitting general mocks. Twenty targeted questions on give-way rules will move your score more than another hundred mixed ones.
Finish the way you should have started: three consecutive full-length mocks at your state’s real question count and pass mark, cleared with marks in hand. If you cannot do that at home with no clock pressure and no nerves, the retake fee is not going to fix it.
One failed attempt genuinely does not mean much. Two identical attempts with no change in between is the pattern that turns a five-minute test into a month-long problem.
