RTA Theory Test: How Many Questions Can You Get Wrong? (2026)
2026-08-31
Eight out of thirty-five
The RTA theory test is 35 questions with a 75% pass mark, so 27 correct answers pass. That leaves eight permitted mistakes โ a reasonably comfortable margin by international standards.
For comparison, New Zealand allows three out of 35 on an identically sized paper, and Singapore allows five out of 50. The UAE sits closer to the forgiving end of the range.
What is not forgiving is the price. At AED 220 per attempt, the RTA theory test is among the most expensive single attempts of any theory test we cover โ roughly ten times the UK fee.
Why the fee changes the calculation
When a resit costs AED 220, the economics of "just try it and see" collapse. Two unnecessary attempts cost more than most candidates would spend on a month of structured preparation.
This makes the eight-mistake allowance less generous than it appears. The allowance tells you what passes; the fee tells you how expensive it is to find out you were wrong.
The rational approach is to over-prepare relative to the pass mark, because the marginal cost of an extra evening of study is zero and the marginal cost of an extra attempt is AED 220.
Where the eight go
Traffic signs take the largest share, and the UAE uses a sign system that combines Gulf-standard and international conventions โ candidates who learned to drive elsewhere frequently assume familiarity they do not have.
Right of way at intersections and roundabouts comes second. Roundabout discipline in particular carries specific lane rules that are tested directly.
Third is the speed limit and penalty block โ limits by road type, the black points system, and fines. It is memorisation, it is dull, and it is reliably present.
Fourth, the desert and highway-specific material: sandstorm procedures, high-speed following distances, and fatigue on long straight roads. Content that has no analogue in most other countriesโ banks.
Preparing when each attempt is expensive
Aim to sit practice tests at 32 or better out of 35 rather than the 27 that technically passes. The gap between those two numbers is the insurance policy against AED 220.
Track misses by category. Eight allowed mistakes disappear quickly if six of them come from a signs section you never studied properly.
Sit full 35-question mocks rather than short quizzes, so the practice matches the paper.
Then clear three consecutive mocks with margin before booking. At this price point, an extra evening at home is the cheapest part of the entire licensing process.
FAQ
How many questions can you get wrong on the RTA theory test?
Eight. The test is 35 questions with a 75% pass mark, so 27 correct answers pass.
How much does the RTA theory test cost?
AED 220 per attempt โ among the most expensive theory tests we cover, and the same fee applies to each resit.
What is the pass mark for the theory test in Dubai?
Seventy-five percent, which is 27 correct answers out of 35.
I already drive in another country. Do I still need to study?
Yes. The UAE sign system and roundabout rules differ from many others, and prior experience often creates false confidence rather than an advantage.
