Failed the RTA Theory Test? What a Retake Costs and How to Fix It (2026)
2026-08-31
What a retake costs
Each attempt at the RTA theory test costs AED 220. There is no reduced resit rate, so two fails and a pass means AED 660 for a test that costs AED 220 to pass first time.
That makes the UAE one of the more expensive places in the world to fail a driving theory test. The UK charges ยฃ23 per attempt, India charges โน50 for a retest, and Victoria in Australia gives the first attempt away free.
Rebooking is arranged through the RTA, and availability at your chosen centre is the practical constraint on timing.
Why the second attempt matters more here
With eight permitted mistakes, a fail means you missed nine or more out of 35 โ that is a quarter of the paper, and it does not happen by bad luck. It happens because a topic block was not covered.
The instinct after a fail is to rebook quickly and get it over with. At AED 220 a go, that instinct is expensive if the underlying gap is still there.
The productive question is which block the misses came from. Nine or more wrong answers almost always trace to one or two categories rather than scattering evenly.
The blocks to fix first
Traffic signs, because they carry the most questions and are pure recall. The UAE system blends Gulf-standard and international conventions, so assuming familiarity from driving elsewhere is a common and costly mistake.
Roundabout and intersection right of way, because the lane rules are specific and directly tested rather than left to judgement.
Speed limits and the black points system, because this is administrative memorisation that candidates skip and the paper reliably asks about.
Desert and highway conditions, including sandstorm procedure and high-speed following distances โ material with no equivalent in most other countries and therefore easy to overlook entirely.
Before you pay again
List every question you guessed on alongside every one you got wrong. Guesses that landed are invisible in your score and will be re-tested on a different paper.
Drill the weakest category on its own rather than re-sitting mixed mocks, which spend most of their questions re-confirming what you already know.
Sit three full 35-question mocks and clear 32 or better on each. The difference between practising at 27 and practising at 32 is the difference between one AED 220 payment and two.
Only then rebook. An extra evening of preparation costs nothing; an extra attempt costs AED 220.
FAQ
How much does it cost to retake the RTA theory test?
AED 220 per attempt, the same as the first โ there is no discounted resit rate.
How many wrong answers fail the RTA theory test?
Nine. You need 27 of 35 correct, so eight wrong answers still passes.
Will I get the same questions on a retake?
No. The test draws from a larger bank, so the same rules reappear with different wording.
What should I study first after failing?
Traffic signs and roundabout right-of-way rules. Those two blocks account for most of the marks candidates lose.
