How long you have to wait

The rules vary more than the tests do. California allows three attempts on a single permit application, and applicants under 18 must wait seven days between attempts — adults can generally return sooner, subject to appointment availability.

Florida has no mandatory waiting period as such, but charges a re-exam fee for each additional attempt. Texas and New York are governed mainly by appointment availability rather than a fixed statutory gap.

In practice the binding constraint in most states is the appointment calendar, not the rulebook. If your local office is booked out three weeks, that is your wait regardless of what the regulations permit.

What it costs to try again

California’s $46 permit application fee covers the knowledge test, and the three attempts sit inside that single application — so a second try does not cost extra, but exhausting all three means paying the full fee again.

Structurally, this makes the US permit test cheaper to fail than most countries’ equivalents. That is a mixed blessing — a low retake cost removes the financial pressure that pushes candidates to prepare properly the first time.

The mistake that causes second fails

You will not see the same questions again. Every state draws from a bank far larger than the paper, so the specific items you missed are unlikely to return in the same words. Reviewing remembered questions is the single most common reason a second attempt goes the same way as the first.

List every question you guessed on, not only the ones you got wrong. Guesses that happened to land are the gaps most likely to fail you next time, and they leave no trace on your score.

Then rebuild the buffer: three full-length mocks at your state’s real question count and pass mark, cleared with margin. If that is not repeatable at home, the retest will not go differently.
