Seven, and not one more

The DVSA multiple-choice theory test is 50 questions with a pass mark of 43 correct, which is 86%. That leaves exactly seven wrong answers. The eighth fails you. Northern Ireland’s DVA theory test uses the same 43-of-50 standard.

Seven out of fifty sounds generous until you notice it is 14% of the paper, and that the questions are not evenly difficult. Candidates who describe themselves as knowing “most of it” are frequently sitting somewhere between 80% and 85% — which is a fail with a comfortable feeling attached.

The multiple-choice section is only half the test. Hazard perception is scored separately and must be passed in its own right, so a strong multiple-choice score does not compensate for a weak clip section.

Why the seven disappear faster than expected

Errors cluster by topic rather than scattering evenly. A candidate weak on stopping distances does not lose one mark on stopping distances — they lose three or four, because the DVSA bank returns to the topic repeatedly across a 50-question paper.

This is what turns a comfortable-feeling 85% into a fail. The overall gap is small, but it is concentrated, and the test is long enough to find the concentration.

The corollary is useful: a single weak topic is usually worth more marks than a general revision sweep across everything you already half-know.

The topics that consume the margin

Stopping distances are the classic. They are pure memorisation, they appear reliably, and “roughly right” is not an option when the answer choices are adjacent numbers.

Road signs come second, and specifically the less photogenic ones — lane control, motorway signals, and the signs that look similar in a hurry. Everyone learns the common warning triangles; the bank knows this.

Third is the vulnerable road users and safety margins material — cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders, and following distances in poor conditions. It is heavily represented in the DVSA bank and easy to under-study because it feels like common sense until the question asks for a specific distance or position.

Fourth, the documents and legal block: insurance, MOT, and licence requirements. Dull, memorisable, and worth two or three of your seven if ignored.

Building the buffer

Practise to a target of two or three wrong, not seven. Nerves and unfamiliar phrasing reliably add a couple of errors on the day, and that has to come out of margin you established beforehand.

Record the topic behind every wrong answer rather than the score alone. Three mocks at 44/50 tell you very little; three mocks where every miss was a stopping-distance question tell you exactly what tomorrow’s revision is.

Sit full 50-question mocks rather than short quizzes. Short sets are useful for diagnosing weak areas but they misrepresent both the arithmetic and the concentration a real paper demands.

When three consecutive full mocks clear 46 or better, the multiple-choice section is genuinely under control — and you can put the remaining time into hazard perception, which is where a lot of otherwise well-prepared candidates come unstuck.
