How soon you can book again
There is no fixed statutory waiting period after failing the Driver Theory Test. The RSA recommends allowing around three business days before sitting again, and in practice the binding constraint is test centre availability.
Because nothing formally stops you rebooking immediately, the temptation is to do exactly that. On a test where only five wrong answers are permitted, a fast rebooking without changing anything is usually a second €45.
The recommended three days is enough to close one or two weak categories properly, which is what most narrow fails actually require.
What the retake costs
Each attempt is €45 for category B. There is no reduced resit rate, so two fails and a pass costs €135 for a test that costs €45 to pass first time.
That is meaningfully more expensive than the UK’s £23 or India’s ₹50 retest fee, and it puts Ireland among the pricier theory tests to fail in Europe.
The delay costs more than the fee. A theory pass is a prerequisite for progressing to lessons and the practical test, so each fail pushes the whole timeline back by however long the next available slot is.
Why second attempts repeat the first
The paper changes. The RSA draws from a bank considerably larger than 40 questions, so revising the specific items you remember is close to worthless — the same rule returns in different wording and a memorised answer does not transfer.
A narrow fail also flatters you. Failing at 34 of 35 usually means several guesses landed in your favour alongside the five misses, so the genuine gap is wider than one mark suggests.
The productive question after a fail is which category the misses came from, not how close the score was.
A plan for the gap
List every question you guessed on as well as every one you got wrong. Lucky guesses are gaps that left no trace on your score and will resurface on a different paper.
Drill the weakest category on its own. Forty focused questions on road markings will move your result more than two hundred mixed ones, because mixed practice mostly re-tests what you already know.
